The Defence Headquarters has commenced arrangements to intervene in the on-going stabilization process in the North East region.
The Chief of Civil/Military Cooperation, Rear Admiral Jonathan Ango, gave the indication when he led a team on a visit to the Headquarters of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, the Deputy Director Army Public Relations, stated this in a statement in Maiduguri.
Ango said the team would conduct a need assessment to identify areas where the defence headquarters could execute “Quick Impact Projects” to alleviate the suffering of the people.
He said the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, had directed that developmental projects be initiated in order to support the stabilisation process in the region.
The Theatre Commander, Major General Lucky Irabor, said the defence headquarters initiative was a laudable one.
Irabo said having won the fight against insurgency, the operation was currently going into the stabilization phase, with emphasis on developmental issues necessary to revitalize the region.
Meanwhile, Irabor has reassured the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Agencies of the support of the theatre command in the conduct of their activities.
Irabor gave assurance when he received the newly appointed Head of OCHA, Nigeria, Juilian Hareis, in Maiduguri.
He said the command was working in synergy with OCHA to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian services to Internally Displaced Persons in the North East.
Irabor said it was important to bring succour to the teeming population of IDPs affected by the insurgency in the region.
Hareis thanked the command for cooperating with OCHA in coordinating the operations of humanitarian agencies in the area.
