Alhaji Aminu Ibrahim, Katsina State Commissioner for Environment, has expressed unhappiness with some local governments’ Emergency Response Committees in assisting people affected by the rains and windstorms in the state.
Ibrahim made the remarks during an interactive session with directors of water and sanitation departments of the 34 local government areas of the state in Katsina on Thursday.
He said the activities of some of the local government emergency response committees toward assisting victims of heavy rains and windstorms was discouraging.
He said that as the state emergency response committee was mandated to review the activities of the local government committees, they should always ensure that they sent their monthly reports to the ministry.
The commissioner, who urged the committees to improve their assistance to the victims of flood disaster, said the meeting was to ascertain the damage caused by rains and windstorm across the state.
Ibrahim also expressed dismay at non-compliance of some local government caretaker chairmen in supporting the water and sanitation departments.
He, therefore, called for their cooperation and support so as to achieve the desired objectives.
Earlier, Alhaji Hassan Rawayau, Executive Director, state Rehabilitation and Emergency Relief Agency (RERA), urged the directors to always sensitise the public on the importance of clearing drains and waterways.
He also said the local government emergency and response committees were assigned to make all the necessary arrangements for relief materials before the distribution of the state’s assistance to the victims.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that all the directors had narrated their experiences and achievements recorded in their respective areas at the session.
NAN recalls that windstorm had last month wrecked havoc injuring some students and destroying some schools and houses in Katsina, Batagarawa and Daura, among others.
