The great American has not had a particularly impressive season, losing early at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, but she remains the biggest star in the women’s game by a distance and would surely have been amongst the favourites to win the gold medal in the Japanese capital.

The governing body of men’s tennis announced Murray, Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, Australian John Millman and Frenchman Jeremy Chardy will replace Djokovic, John Isner, Vasek Pospisil and Sam Querrey, who stepped down to form the Professional Tennis Players Association.

“It’s not safe for players to go from the semi-finals or final in New York… and then play in Madrid at altitude on clay when they haven’t competed for a long time,” Murray told a news conference during the “Battle of the Brits” charity tournament
