Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno has announced scholarship awards to 15 volunteer health workers in recognition of their selfless services to the state.
The governor’s Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy, Isa Gusau, stated this in a statement on Monday in Maiduguri.
According to Gasau, the governor announced the awards on Sunday when he visited the Internally Displaced Persons’ camp in Baga.
He stated that the governor was impressed with the volunteers, hence the award to enable the beneficiaries to further their educational career.
“Zulum was so impressed after reviewing their selfless efforts and directed Borno State Scholarship Board to fully fund the 15 volunteers’ further education to any level.
‘’This depends on their eligibility for admission and individual’s interest to study either Medicine, Nursing or Midwifery in any tertiary institution in Maiduguri, the state capital,” he stated.
Gusau added that the governor supervised the distribution of food items to the IDPs and also donated N50 million for the resettling of the 5,000 IDPs with their families.
He stated that Zulum commended Federal Government’s food support to the state through the National Emergency Management Agency and North East Development Commission.
Gasau also stated that the governor also visited the Army formation at Baga, where he lauded its personnel for their sacrifice in protecting lives and property of the returnees.
In another development, the governor’s aide has described the report that Boko Haram insurgents attacked the governor’s convoy on his way to Baga as unfounded.
The statement read in part, “We write to quickly clarify that contrary to the ‘breaking news’ by an online news medium, neither the governor nor any component of his convoy was attacked by anyone.”
