Zimbabwe’s 90-year old President Robert Mugabe has left the country for a weeklong medical leave to Singapore, state media reported on Thursday.
Mugabe, who had cataract operations a few years ago in Singapore, left Harare on Wednesday for a routine eye checkup, the Herald said, quoting a statement from presidential spokesman, George Charamba.
Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980, travelled to Singapore more often this year, fuelling concerns and rumours about his health.
Government officials have repeatedly denied Wikileaks report alleging the veteran leader has prostate cancer.
Mugabe is Africa’s oldest president and one of the longest reigning leaders in the world.
His term in office will end in 2018 and he is eligible to run for another five year term.
