| The Young Progressives Party has reacted to the claims by Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed that the opposition is mobilizing armed bandits and Boko Haram insurgents to perpetrate massive acts of violence across the country during the general elections. In a press conference, held at the party secretariat in Abuja, the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Bishop Amakiri described the Minister’s claims as “mischievous to say the least, especially coming from a ruling party who according to him is still acting as opposition”. Comrade Amakiri accused the ruling party of “playing to the gallery in matters of urgent national security”, describing it as “the highest level of irresponsibility by a government whose primary purpose is to protect lives and property.” He condemned the APC for “raising alarm rather than acting on the intelligence at its disposal”, pointing out that it “clearly shows a disconnect and that there is something sinister being planned by the APC”. The party while calling on all Nigerians to resist any plan to postpone the general elections or arrest opposition leaders based on trump up charges also counselled both APC and PDP to focus on issue-based campaign rather than overheating the polity with accusations and counter accusations claiming comparative statistics have shown that both the APC and PDP have failed Nigerians and should never again be trusted with leadership. Comrade Amakiri condemned the PDP and APC for absconding from the debates calling on Nigerians to end the sense of entitlement by recycled old political leaders who have impoverished them in the past 19 years. He also used the opportunity to commend the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria, the Nigerian Elections Debate Group, all Presidential candidates and their running mates who participated in the just concluded national debate reserving special commendation for the performance of its candidates for their flawless delivery of the YPP manifesto and overall policy direction if voted into office. The Chairman noted that Nigerians confirmed that their performance was top notch and this he said was further confirmed by high ratings on several independent opinion polls. He said “Noteworthy is the recent opinion poll by Vanguard Newspapers where 58% of respondents were mostly impressed by Prof. Kingsley Moghalu’s grasp of the nation’s challenges and his pragmatic solutions to same”. Bishop Amakiri concluded by telling Nigerians that the YPP remains a people oriented movement with the core mandate of building an egalitarian society anchored on the Nigerian citizens as the prime resource even as he called on Nigerians to join the party in the quest of building a new progressive and greater Nigeria. |
