Governor MaiMala Buni of Yobe on Thursday in Damaturu approved the automatic employment of 37 graduating nurses and midwives into the state civil service to reduce maternal mortality in the state.
Buni gave the approval at the graduation ceremony at the state government-owned Shehu Sule College of Nursing and Midwifery, Damaturu.
The 37 midwives were trained by the state government, in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, Women for Health.
He also approved a 100 percent increase in the monthly allowances of all nursing and midwifery students of the College, just as he directed the construction of new hostels in the school.
Buni reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustain and build on the progress recorded in the health sector in the state, and to continue to support the College to meet all its accreditation requirements.
Dr. Fatima Adamu, the National Programme Manager, W4H, represented by Dr. Usman Gwarzo highlighted the main purpose of the programme.
Adamu said: “The primary purpose of the W4H programme is to increase the number of female health workers, especially midwives, in training and deploying them to rural areas.”
Earlier, Provost of the College, Hadiza Sabo, expressed her gratitude and appealed to the state government to assist the institution meet all its accreditation requirements.
