A group, The Initiative, has called on the Federal Government to urgently implement the vital and salient resolutions of the 2014 National Conference in the interest of justice, equity and unity of the country.
The group made the call in a communique issued as part of its resolutions after a peace talk by selected Nigerian leaders convened in Lagos by Nigerian National Summit Group in collaboration with the Charles Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the communiqué was jointly signed by Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, an elder statesman; and Tony Uranta, Executive Secretary of NNSG.
It said the implementation of political and economic solutions of the 2014 National Conference was to guarantee the sustainable unity and progress of the country.
It said: “This should be designed into long-term pragmatically strategic development plans of appropriately defined tenure.
“This should be backed by law to ensure that they are sustained, even in the event of democratic change of governments.”
The communique said the peace meeting had established a national peace, security and reconciliation committee.
It said: “This shall comprise persons of impeccable character and integrity to traverse the country mediating between aggrieved groups to nip high-conflagration tendencies in the bud.
“That advocacy commences to ensure that all ethnic nationalities shall be seen to be equal irrespective of size.
“That there is need for governments to restructure the country to devolve power to the component units in line with the principles of federalism, and agitations for political and economic federalism not be ignored.”
The group, therefore, said governments should be encouraged to urgently establish Office of Neutral Ombudsmen.
This, it noted, was with responsibility to monitor the polity and with powers to reprimand and discipline any erring Nigerian citizen or body regardless of status.
It said the conveners of The Initiative will explore the possibility of convening a fully representative but short lived national roundtable to be broadcast live if necessary.
The meeting was attended by eminent persons drawn from across the country, including Ghali Na’Abba, former Speaker of the House of Representatives; and Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum Executive, Senator Bassey Ewa Henshaw.
Others present were Mohammed Kumali, Toyo Nkoyo, Dr. Ferdinand Ikwang, Kola Onadipe, Prof. Pat Utomi, Dr. Bisi Akin-Alabi, Dr. Umar Ardo, Habiba Abiola and Dr. Ayakeme Whisky.
