The Lagos State Police Command has arrested nine policemen for allegedly extorting money from motorists.
Three among the nine were fake policemen.
The men were arrested at Oyingbo, Gbagada and Ikeja axis of Lagos State.
It was gathered that at Oyingbo, the policemen arrested were attached to Area C command.
A team of X-Squad policemen, who went on patrol to monitor policemen breaking the rules and regulations of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, IGP on corruption, sighted the three policemen allegedly extorting money from some 911 passenger buses at Oyigbo.
As soon as the money exchanged hands, the team appeared seemingly from out of darkness and swooped on the policemen.
Three policemen were also arrested at Gbagada.
They were said to be attached to Bariga Police Station.
They were allegedly caught by the X-Squad team while they were extorting money from commercial bike riders at night.
The commercial bike riders were also arrested, not just for giving bribe but for contravening the order of the state government that they must not operate after certain hours of the day.
Three other policemen arrested at Ikeja had been discovered to be fake policemen.
A police source said: “The three policemen arrested in Ikeja are not real policemen.
“They’re spy policemen, who went and dressed like conventional policemen.
“They’re all fake policemen!
“They wore police badges, NPF, which ought not to be so!
“They were arrested for dressing like real policemen to escort vehicles across border.
“Efforts are on top gear to rid the command of bad eggs.
“The policemen will definitely face an orderly room trial.”
