A widow, identified as simply as Eunice, has been threatened with a quite notice by her landlord for reporting the rape of a five-year-old girl by a 35-year-old man, who happened to be the son of the landlord.
This fact was contained in a petition presented to the Lagos State House of Assembly, written by the widow.
Presenting the petition on the floor of the House during a plenary session, the Clerk, Segun Abiru, said that the widow alleged that the minor was defiled inside the toilet by the son of her landlord.
It was also stated that neighbours came to the little girl’s rescue and took the accused to police station.
The landlord consequently threatened to evict Eunice from his house.
Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho said that the Child Rights Law, revealed that rape attracted life imprisonment.
Tejuosho lamented and wondered why the alleged rapist was released on bail.
Tejuosho recommended the case to be committed to the Office of Public Defender.
She also appealed to the House to take a second look at the offence of rape, emphasizing that it carries life imprisonment and is not bailable.
Hon. Rotimi Olowo said the rapist could be a nymphomaniac and needed psychological treatment.
The Chairman, Committee on Judiciary and Public Petition, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, noted that the law provides life imprisonment for rape.
Agunbiade said the defilement of minor was becoming unbearable.
Agunbiade suggested that ministries should enlighten people on rape cases.
