The noticeable improved security situation in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja is as a result of synergy between the Brigade of Guards and other security agencies, Brigadier General Emmanuel Atewe, the Commander of the Presidential Guards Brigade has said.
The Presidential Guards Brigade is a special unit of the Nigerian Army, established to take responsibility for the security of the President and the First Family, the entire Aso Rock and by extension, the Federal Capital Territory.
Atewe spoke with State House correspondents on Friday after the decoration of four newly promoted officers of the Brigade from the rank of Major to Lieutenant Colonel.
Atewe commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika, for the establishment of the 176 Guards Battalion, which he noted contributed to the improved security situation in Abuja.
He also said that as more people move into the city to reside, additional security personnel would be required to protect lives and property.
The newly promoted officers are Kingsley Inyang (36) from Akwa Ibom State, Ahmed Ahmadu (38) from Edo State, Chukwuka Akaliho (36) from Abia State and Oseni Braimoh (36) also from Edo State.
The Commander charged them to see their promotion as an additional responsibility, saying that they could assume the role of Chief Security Officer of any operation.
Speaking further on the security situation, Atewe said: “We have done our utmost best to carry out our assignments as dictated by the law and of course with the help of other sister agencies.
“The Guards Brigade cannot carry out the security situation in Abuja all alone and environs.
“With the assistance of other security agencies, civilians and our friends, we find out that we have been able to do the little we have contributed to the security in Abuja environment.
“As more people are moving to Abuja, all the security services require additional men to meet up with the current security challenges.
“The creation of 176 Special Guards Battalion contributed to the improved security of Abuja.
“You will also see that he is also all over the places going to operational areas, encouraging the men and women who are fighting for the peace of this country. “At all levels, the morale of men is being enhanced by ensuring that all they require are provided in terms of their personal welfare, training and others.”
