The Irigwe Development Association has decried the withdrawal of the military from communities in Iregwe chiefdom of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Sunday Abdu, National President of the Association, said this in a statement on Friday in Jos.
According to him, the withdrawal of the men of the military task force, Operation Safe Haven, was brought about renewed attacks on the communities.
Abdu explained that gunmen had continually unleashed mayhem on some of the communities in the chiefdom in recent times.
He said: “In recent times, the Irigwe chiefdom has not known peace owing to the activities of unidentified gunmen who have continued to destroy farmlands.
“We expected a more robust activity by the military to apprehend the culprits and bring their activities to a halt. Unfortunately, this ugly trend continued.
“We are indeed worried by the recent withdrawal of soldiers from our domain. That these atrocities have resumed, is the more reason we need security presence in our land.”
Abdu urged the military to redeploy soldiers to their domain for the safety of lives and property.
“We call on government to rise up to tackle this challenge, if not, Irigwe land will be wiped off even before the Covid-19 comes close to the state,” he said.
