Samuel Onitiju, Vice-President, Para-soccer Federation of Nigeria, has promised to elevate the sport to continental level under the new board.
Onitiju said on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria Abuja that the federation would build on its achievements in the last four years.
NAN reports that Misbahu Didi and Onitiju were elected President and Vice-President at the February 15 elections into the board of Para-sports federations in the country.
NAN also reports that Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, inaugurated the new boards of the seven Para-sports federations on Tuesday in Abuja.
Other federations inaugurated are: Amputee Football, Para-Athletics, Para-Powerlifting, Para-Wheelchair Basketball and Sitting Volleyball Federations.
“We will promote Para-soccer to continental level; we will continue to partner with the Federal Government to promote Para-soccer in Africa and beyond.’’
The vice-president said the prospect of the sport in the country was promising, adding that with the plans the federation had for the players, they would have more opportunities to compete and be fully engaged by clubs.
Onitiju said that zonal and national competitions would be expanded for better development of the games.
He said: “We also have various state competitions that will be coming up very soon.
“I urge the public to continue to support Para-soccer and other Para games.’’
NAN reports that Didi and some paraplegic persons founded Para-soccer in 1988, which has become a National Youths Festival and Games sport.
