The Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, has vowed to ensure that the present squad of the Golden Eaglets is kept together to be a part of the U-20 national team as well as the Olympics team, also known as the U-23 national team.
Abdullahi said: “This Golden Eaglets team has dazzled all here at the United Arab Emirates and virtually everybody here has been commending them.
“We are happy as Nigerians and we will make sure that this team doesn’t go the way of the previous one.
“That was what I was discussing with the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (Alhaji Aminu Maigari) while watching the game.
“That the Federation should make sure this team is kept together in order to continue the good work and performance we have seen here.
“I can assure you that some of these boys would form the crop of players that would form the nucleus of the team that would be in the U-23 national team that will battle for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
“This is what we are planning.
“We need to put a structure in place and this is what we are doing and it’s beginning to gel.”
The Minister disclosed shortly after the Eaglets spanked Sweden 3-0 on Tuesday to qualify for the final of the 2013 U- 17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
The Minister lavished praises on the team and charged it to win the Cup.
Abdullahi said: “I have told the players that nobody will remember their exploits in this competition unless they win the Cup and they have promised me that they will do so for President Goodluck Jonathan, who has been their inspiration and sports loving Nigerians.”
