The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said on Wednesday that the commission has successfully prosecuted 200 of the 870,000 electoral offenders on its list.
Jega said those prosecuted were those arrested in connection with offenses committed in relations to the voter registration and general election of 2011.
Jega, who spoke at a INEC/Civil Society dialogue on plans and progress towards the 2015 elections, said prosecuting electoral offenders had been “a big problem’’ because of paucity of fund and manpower.
He added: “In actual fact, some of those apprehended have been prosecuted and convicted but the number is just too small compared to those remaining.
“A youth corper was also prosecuted and sentenced in Ondo for electoral manipulation.”
Jega said it was the police that was overseeing the prosecution before the task was handed over to INEC.
