The Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Ochekpe, has donated 10 33KVA transformers to be distributed to rural communities in Plateau State, an official has said.
Idi Waziri, the state Water Resources Commissioner, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Jos on Wednesday that one of the transformers had been released to Kwang community in Jos South.
Waziri said two of the transformers had also been released to Jengre in Bassa Local Government Area of the state.
He said: “The beneficiaries are being selected based on urgent need.
“Kwang community, for instance, has been in darkness for years and we thought we should assist them.”
Waziri said that the ministry was determined to ensure that only very needy settlements benefited.
According to him, the state government will complement Ochekpe’s effort to improve the living standard of rural dwellers.
Waziri explained that some of the transformers would be shared among some emerging new extensions in Jos metropolis and advised the beneficiaries to use the facility judiciously.
The commissioner said that the provision of electricity was a major concern of the Governor Jonah Jang-led administration, adding that the power sector was a cardinal point in the governor’s transformation agenda.
He added: “We have recognised the relevance of stable power supply in the quest for a better life for the rural areas and shall do everything to improve that, to minimise rural-urban migration.”
