Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State on Monday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct the 2015 general election in one day.
Wamakko made the call in Sokoto when he received the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle.
He said: “This is the only option that will ensure the conduct of transparent elections in the country.
“If that is not possible, let the elections be started with the House of Assembly, followed by the governorship election and National Assembly election while the presidential election should come last.”
The governor explained that it was only by so doing that there would be free, fair and credible elections that would usher in democratically elected representatives of the people.
Wamakko added: “It is only free, fair and transparent elections that will meet the desire of Nigerians to have leaders that will respect their yearnings and aspirations.”
Wamakko said that no amount of intimidation would deter the “progressives”.
The progressives, the governor said, would do everything possible to mobilise their supporters to desist from violence and thuggery, to ensure that the elections were free and fair.
He said that his administration would partner with the US government to improve on the well being of its citizens in the areas of education, water supply and agriculture, among others.
Earlier, Ambassador Entwistle called on Nigerians to shun violence, to have free, fair and credible elections that would ensure democratic governance in the country.
He said that the time had come for Nigerian politicians to shun political violence to ensure transparent elections in 2015.
He said that free and fair elections would ensure good democratic governance for the peace, progress and political development of the country.
He said that the US would support the country to achieve transparent elections in 2015.
The ambassador commended the Sokoto State Government for providing basic infrastructure that had helped to improve the wellbeing of its people.
