The five governors of Nigeria’s South East states have stated their position on the emergence of former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, as the running mate of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar.
This followed their meeting on Saturday in Enugu, after which the Ebonyi State Governor, who was believed to be the main opposition voice to Obi’s emergence, briefed the press.
The Governors, who are members of the South East Governors’ Forum, also had a chieftain of the PDP and one of those opposed to Obi’s emergence, Chris Ubah, at the point where Umahi briefed the press.
Others at the news briefing were the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and his Abia State counterpart, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, was also present at the meeting.
Umahi said Abubakar had sent a message to them that he was travelling outside the country for a few days and would on his return brief them on why he chose Obi as his running mate without consulting them.
