The Peoples Democratic Party in the South West has called on the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to arrest and bring to justice Tope Longe, the Senior Special Assistant to the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who allegedly killed Abiola Teslim Yusuf, a 400 level Accounting student of the state-owned university, the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti.
The PDP said it was compelled to call on the IGP because it appeared the Ekiti State Police Command had been compromised on the matter, adding: “It beats our imagination that a student would be killed in Ekiti State 19 days ago and the police is yet to arrest the man responsible for the murder even though the culprit is known.”
The Zonal Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Kayode Babade, vowed that the party would not keep silent until Longe is brought to justice, saying it was disturbing that instead of arresting and prosecuting him, it was the students who protested his (Teslim) death that the police in Ekiti State arrested.
The statement reads: “On Tuesday, September 25, 2012, Tope Longe was said to have gone to EKSU to drop his girlfriend and in the process, some students demanded for money from him. Teslim Abiola, who was said to be among the students, was said to have lied on Longe’s car bonnet and in his bid to escape giving the students money as demanded, Longe moved his car and hit Teslim Abiola in the process. He (Teslim) died two days after.
“Upon hearing that Teslim Abiola had died, students of EKSU went on rampage, burning vehicles and destroying some of the school properties.
“Curiously, despite that Tope Longe was linked with the murder and he is not at large, the police in Ado-Ekiti has refused to arrest him and bring him to justice.
“Instead of arresting Longe, students who protested their colleague’s death were the ones the police arrested while the school authority is also imposing N10,500 on the students as reparation fee.
“Our question is, why has Tope Longe not been arrested? Is he above the law because he works with Governor Fayemi? Or is working with a governor a licence to kill and get away with it?
“Funny enough, Governor Fayemi has condemned the killing of the four University of Port Harcout students, but he is harbouring Tope Longe, who killed a student of EKSU in the Hovernment House.
“It is on this note that we are calling on the IGP to as a matter of urgency and in the interest of justice order the arrest of Longe and also question the Ekiti State Police Command’s refusal to arrest him (Longe) 19 days after he committed the offence.
“Doing otherwise will mean that anyone who works with a governor has liberty to commit murder and walk the streets free and that will be a direct invitation to anarchy.”
