A 100 level female student, simply identified as Yemi, in the Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, has attempted suicide by drinking a concoction of a fruit juice and Hypo bleaching liquid after her boyfriend, one Samuel, in the same university, called off their relationship.
The incident happened on October 31, 2012 at the Obafemi Awolowo Hall of the university.
According to sources, Yemi decided to kill herself when she discovered she had lost out in her bid to keep her university lover after she called off another relationship with a man he had dated for four years because of Samuel.
A source, who requested anonymity, said: “Yemi was engaged but when she came to UI, she met her lover boy in Obafemi Awolowo Hall, a 300 level student of the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education.
“So she told her fiancé she was opting out of the relationship.
“And that about ended that relationship
“It was later her ex-fiancé got wind of this affair and made threats to her lover boy.
“Uncomfortable with the threat he was receiving, her lover made efforts to sever the relationship and that was why she tried to kill herself because she felt she had lost out.”
Yemi would have died but fortunately her roommates noticed she was gasping for breathe and quickly raise the alarm.
It was gathered that Yemi was rushed to the university’s Jaja Clinic for medical attention.
She was later transferred to the University College Hospital.
However, the incident has become a revving discussion amongst students and staff of the University, who have since been making jest of Yemi as they have termed her the “Hypo Lover.”
The students also now have mock photographs of people “drinking” Hypo bleach and posting such pictures as their Black Berry display pictures and on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and other blogs.
This incident has made Hypo bleach a household name in the University of Ibadan.
