For two bossom friends, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) to engage in a fight is most likely only possible in the sports pitch.
This is the situation that will present itself on February 23, 2012 in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State where the students of Bells University, Otta, Ogun State, will face the students of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti in the University Sports League test runoff, the first season of the league.
Obasanjo is the founder of Bells University while Babalola is the founder of Afe Babalola University.
Both schools will play in the final of the football tournament.
According to Mr. Emmanuel Omijeh, each of the participating universities in the league will be based on club format.
Eight clubs – Phoms, Bently, Legends, Titans, Highlanders, Blazers, Raiders and Diplomats – will be formed.
Students can belong to any of these eight clubs in the sports disciplines that will be available in the first season.
The sports are volleyball, basketball, football, tennis and handball.
He said: “We have our eyes set on Scrabble and Chess in the second season. The purport is to encourage intra-mural competition that will lead to inter-collegiate championships.
“We also want to encourage a situation where students can freely belong to any of these eight clubs in their universities, train and compete in their clubs to play in the intra-mural competitions with an eye to play in the inter-university games.
“This year, we had to test run the format to allow us to perfect the modalities and by next year, the league’s first season will run on its schedule.”
