The United Nations Children Fund says it has spent over N2.4 billion to support various projects and programmes in Plateau in the last five years.
Bhanu Pathak, UNICEF Chief of Field Office in Bauchi, disclosed this when he led other officials of the fund on a courtesy visit to Governor Simon Lalong on Thursday in Jos.
According to Pathak, the monies were channelled into education, health, nutrition, water supply and sanitation as well as child protection.
“Your Excellency, as you know, UNICEF is basically working to protect the rights of women and children and our major concern is to ensure that such category of people have access to basic social amenities.
“We have spent N2.4 billion to support programmes and projects in the last five years to promote the well being of women and children in Plateau.
“These monies were spent in the health, education, water and sanitation, child protection and the nutrition sectors in the state,” he said.
Pathak also said that the fund had provided supplies worth N185 million to the state in the last five years, adding that more support was underway.
He commended the State Government for collaborating with UNICEF to provide social amenities to its citizens, particularly those at the rural levels.
He, however, called on the state government to ensure prompt payment of counterpart funding to enable more projects to come to the state through UNICEF.
Responding, Lalong, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Sonni Tyoden, thanked the UNICEF for the support it had so far rendered to the state.
Lalong, who described the fund as a “worthy partner” of the state, called for more support in improving the lots of the people of the state.
He gave the assurance that the state government would do everything possible to ensure prompt payment of counterpart funds in order to attract more funds to the state and ease the sufferings of rural women and children.
