An 18-year-old Nigerian-American undergraduate at Yale University, United States of America, Aderonke Adejare, has donated N125,000 to Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria.
Adejare said she donated the money to the Foundation as her contribution to help in the treatment of sickle cell patients at the National Sickle Cell Centre.
Adejare told Daily Trust that she raised the money with her little sister Adeola Adejare by making and selling beaded jewellery and donated the proceeds to the Foundation.
“When I was seven years old, I started making beaded jewellery. That was what I sold to raise this money to help patients of sickle cell because I know what they are going through. Nigeria has the world’s largest number of people suffering from sickle cell and that is why I decided to come back home to make the donation.”
While receiving the donation from Adejare, the Chief Executive Officer of National Sickle Cell Foundation, Dr. Annette Akinsete lauded the young lady for the gesture and prayed for her to become successful in life so that she would be able do more and help many people in the future.
