Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has challenged the State Executive Council members to effectively utilise the lower appointees and aides attached to them as a means of relieving the pressure of work on him.
Umahi threw the challenge on Wednesday in Abakaliki while inaugurating additional 513 Executive Assistants, Senior Technical Assistants and Technical Assistants recently appointed by him.
While Umahi charged the new appointees to view their appointments as a call to get involved in governance through diligence and dedication to duty, he appealed to his Commissioners and other members of his executive to save him from extreme work pressure by being alive to their responsibilities.
He noted that the EAs, STAs and TAs appointed so far by his administration have reached over 1000, being the highest political appointment in the country, adding that the essence was for them not only to learn the art of governance, but to help relieve him and his EXCO members from extreme stress occasioned by the myriads of projects ongoing in the State.
Umahi emphasised: “When somebody is appointed to work and you don’t allow him to work, you are killing him, and if you have opportunity to serve and you are not, you are killing yourself.
“There is nothing that is as experiencing as getting involved because there is no other place you can buy experience.
“As you are working, you are exercising your body and it makes you stay younger and live longer, and as you are exercising your body, your mind will be exercised, including your brain.
“So make up your mind that you have been appointed to work in government.
“I am appealing to Commissioners, Exco members, I am dying of work.
“I need help.
“And if you use these people, they will help you and you will help me.
“So don’t try to do it alone or it will break your hand.”
The Governor further indicated that the new appointees would be effectively utilised in the State’s Internally Generated Revenue drive; in schools and Primary Health Centres supervision; projects monitoring, among other functions, adding that their appointment would take financial effect from February 1.
The appointments were the outcome of the Governor’s earlier directive to political stakeholders to nominate three persons from each of the 171 wards in the State to be appointed as aides.
