The British Government has told Nigeria that it intends to issue temperate travel documents to the Spiritual Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
The information came on a day the Nigerian Government said there was nothing to worry about over the fresh threats issued by Kanu, allegedly from Jerusalem, that the South East will boycott the 2019 elections.
Sources said the British authorities in Nigeria have briefed the Nigerian Government about the temporary travel documents they were about to issue to Kanu, who holds a Nigeria-UK dual citizenship.
The British Government said it has the best of intentions towards Nigeria.
Kanu’s passports are with the Nigerian authorise following the case of treason filed against him.
He was granted bail last year, but later fled the country.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has assured all Nigerians that there is no reason to worry about the “hollow outburst” by Kanu on returning to the country “with hell”.
Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, gave the assurance in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.
The presidential aide restated that Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari was strong enough to defend its territory against any threat.
Shehu said: “Instead, we see the re-enactment of his bizarre, episodic threat as a mere distraction which will not be allowed to detract from the existing cordial relationships between Nigeria and other countries.”
According to him, the Buhari administration is in constant touch with other friendly nations and has the best assurances that they would continue to reciprocate the respect Nigeria has for the sovereignty of their nations.
He said: “Nigerians have nothing to fear from this.”
Kanu had threatened in one of his recent appearances that he would return to the country with hell.
