Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, has said he will go ahead and sign an anti-gay bill into law despite pressure and condemnation from the United States of America.
US President, Barack Obama, on Sunday expressed his disappointment at Museveni’s plan to enact the legislation, warning the move would complicate US relations with Uganda and be a step backward for all Ugandans.
The bill, which has been in Uganda’s parliament since 2009, was overwhelmingly passed by legislators recently.
Museveni said on Tuesday at the end of a meeting of the ruling party’s legislators in Kampala, that even though he refused to sign the bill criminalising homosexuality earlier, he would sign the bill now following a scientific explanation from experts that homosexuality is not biological.
He noted that while a previous clause proposing the death penalty for some offences had been dropped, the current proposal could see those convicted facing life imprisonment.
Museveni said all those promoting homosexuality should be dealt with harshly by law.
