Two students: David Confidence (24) and Charles Courage (20), were on Monday arraigned before a Wuse Zone Six Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly being in possession of illegal locally made pistol.
The defendants, both residents of Mabushi, Abuja, are facing a charge of unlawful possession of firearms.
The prosecutor, Okonko Udo, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on September 6, 2021 at about 2:15am in Mabushi, Abuja.
Udo alleged that a locally made pistol was discovered in the defendants’ possession on the said date.
He further alleged that during interrogation, the defendants could not give satisfactory account of how they came about the pistol.
He said the offence contravened Section 4 and punishable under Section 27(b) (i ) ( ii) of the firearms Act, Cap F 29 of the laws of the federation, 2004.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.
The Magistrate, Chioma Amanwachi, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N2 million with one surety each in like sum.
The Magistrate ordered that the surety must be a civil servant on Grade Level 10 and above.
In addition, Amanwachi directed that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court, to be verified by the registrar of the court and the prosecutor.
She adjourned the case until March 15 for hearing.
