An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded two men, Akpan Survival, 26, and Stanley Arong, 26, in Kikikiri Prisons for allegedly defiling their neighbour’s 11-year-old daughter.
The magistrate, B.O. Osunsanmi, refused to take the pleas of the defendants but ordered the police to return their case file to the State Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
Osunsanmi adjourned the case until November 11 for mention.
Survival and Arong, both of whom are residents of Maryland area of Lagos State, are being tried for defilement.
Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, had told the court that the defendants committed the offence for two years at their residence.
Ayorinde said that the defendants had carnal knowledge of the girl several times.
He said: “The defendants usually called the girl into their room and had sexual intercourse with her.
“On September 5, when the girl’s mother returned from work, she discovered that her daughter was not her usual self.
“After interrogating her, she told her mother that the defendants had been sleeping with her since she was nine years old.
“The mother reported the case to the police and the defendants were arrested.”
Ayorinde said that the offence violated Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the section prescribes life imprisonment for defilement.
