Two men were Monday arraigned before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for alleged possession of 90 wraps of Indian hemp.
The defendants are: Kehinde Kolawole, 30, and Jamiu Surajudeen, 25, both facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and indecent act.
The two have however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police prosecutor, SP Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the defendants committed the offences at 9 p.m. on January 21, at Abule Ijesha area of Yaba, Lagos.
Nurudeen said that residents of the area reported to their local station that some boys were selling different hard drugs in their area.
He added that a police patrol team was deployed which raided the criminal hideout and arrested the two defendants with a nylon bag containing over 90 sticks of Indian hemp suspected to be for sale.
Nurudeen told court that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 168, 134 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The that section 134 stipulates a two-year jail term for the offence of indecent act, while 168 carries three months imprisonment for breach of peace.
Chief Magistrate, Peter Nwaka, in his ruling, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Nwaka directed that both sureties must be residing within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He held that they must have their addresses verified by the court.
Nwaka subsequently adjourned the case until February 17 for mention.
