Nigerians are increasingly concerned at the condition of democratic governance in this nation. As the chances of seeing the dividends of democracy and material improvement in the lives of Nigerians recede almost hourly, questions and soulful interrogations are necessary to determine whether we are captive and beholden to a ruining class who have lost the compass to paddle us into a safe harbour. President Goodluck Jonathan baleful incumbency has, without doubt, continues to be nothing but resoundingly baleful. His mid-term report, with its noisome but empty gloss of achievements, has confirmed the enthronement of a ruining class on Nigerians.
Jonathan’s two years in the saddle as the president of the most populous black nation in the world has not transformed Nigeria from its shameful state of bestial underdevelopment into a towering Eldorado of economic growth and material prosperity. Rather, we all have watched the apparent criminality, profligacy, arrogance and sheer impunity of a greedy class that has no iota of revulsion towards its own inefficiency, purposelessness and failure. In no secrecy and at every turn of our nation’s history, the Peoples Democratic Party’s ruining class has come out to demonstrate its lack of vision; its goallessness, its chaotic impunity, endless greed, its absurdity and its dogged refusal to learn from the yellow pages of history.
In their silliness, we have watched with indifferent abandon the horrid growth of their class, their systematic suppression of the people’s will in order to nurture and preserve their filthy class and also their devil’s wish to stick tenaciously to the decreed hierarchy despite grassroots cry for messianic salvation. In their anointed hands, they have paddled the nation’s ship to the brink of destruction. In their hands, the nation’s hope has withered and the ground seems set for despair, mass rebellion and, if need be, mass uprising.
President Jonathan is incapable of dreaming big for Nigerians. The artistic rendition of noble ideals for a nation could not find a space in the heart of a man with small imagination. That fierce pride, which was characteristic of our nationalist fathers, that sense of purpose and discipline, which were the abiding, and motivating forces behind the prosperity of any nation are lacking in his administration. That profound sense of mission, which spurs true leaders on, is criminally absent in the composition of PDP and its profligate looters.
Those fearless men who fought with body and soul and with their fire-oozing pens in order to carve out our independence for this country, would now bemoan those great seasons and wonder sleeplessly The questions being loudly asked in beer parlour joints, academic groves and dimly-lit bedrooms is this: what legacies will the present ruining class under Jonathan’s watch bequeath to posterity? The present ruining ruling class has, within the past 12 years, done their worse. Their touch on the economy becomes a stifling muzzle. As the economy ails and worsens, this ruining class continues in the avowed mission of ruining the country beyond redemption. The spectacular demolition of our economy has continue to defy solution and those who are brave to offer suggestions are told to shut up.
A system that paves the way for billion of stolen public money to be carted off into the secured region of Switzerland, Dubai and South Africa is congenitally sick and highly unjust. While the nation gropes in economic darkness and sails close to the brink of bankruptcy, the ruling class continues to display with brazenness those bags of money meant for the upkeep of the Nigerian masses. Under their usual cloak of hypocrisy, they tell us to patronise local goods and be proud of those products made out of our sweat, but this empty call has been consistently negated by their own pathological attachment to the USA, Europe and other exotic regions of the world and by their own unbridled lust for goods of foreign extraction.
More significantly, the distress trumpet has been blown to all the four corners of the country, calling on the tired citizens to wake up from their moral slumber and take up arms against our moral decadence.
Their ethical rhetoric, in spite of its congenital unworkability, has further revealed that our ruling barons are not made of saintliness but descendants of Machiavelli. Like Machiavelli, they have taught the citizens the principle of immorality. The National Orientation Agency could be well told in advance that it has no palliation to offer the voluptuous taste of our rulers. What is most painful is the deliberate hypocrisy and pretence of this sickening class to moral superiority. Their polemics of do as I say and not as I do is self-evident because more often than not, their sordid actions, both publicly and privately, have belied those ethical creeds they profess to hold dear.
Prince Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Central Bank Governor, is at present saddled with the burden of extricating his reputation from the irritating, titillating and salacious stories of extreme philandering. His proclivity is one of insatiable sexual appetite. Shame on you Gov!
It is hard, very hard indeed to survive in present-day Nigeria without being monstrously wicked and less sparing of kindness. As things now stand, this nation is capable of making those who are evil more so and their ranks swell all the way. As things now stand, it is very difficult to find among the bracket of our ruining class one who is truly good and patriotic. Since it is in the biological tradition of parasite to breed more parasites, the cycle goes on and on unbroken, unchallenged, until it reaches a point when even the silent gods would rise solidly behind the hewers of wood and drawers of water. To further make the powerless citizens the butt of their cruel joke, these rulers mount the rostrum with tightened eyeballs and call on us all to show more fawning patriotism. Aha, patriotism on flat, yawning stomachs! Those clappy polemics on patriotism, which often tumbled from their rosy cheeks, are all windy, soulless statements that would fall flat on critical self-examination.
Those political gurus, with their paid hirelings (Drs. Reuben Abati and Doyin Okupe, et al), who chant the cliché song of patriotism with foamy mouth, are themselves not too prepared to dance to this national song. In this country, the drum of patriotism has always been beaten by weak hands and this had made it sound like a chaotic contralto to the ears. The inevitable doom of starvation is not far off, we are told. Surely, hard times are imminent, but before then, must this country be driven to the precipice of fear and inaction? Must we suffer all these injustices despite the fertility of our lands? Despite the inexhaustible resources at our disposal? But one incurable symptom that runs through the length and breadth of our farcical governance is the stark imbecility of workable ideas among the circle of our ruling emperors.
As this nation burns, President Jonathan remains clueless. His midterm record is a book written by truth twisters. It has been prettified to a point of absolute bullshit. Where is the stability in electric supply? Where is shelter for our people? Where are the jobs for our sit-at-home graduates? Where are the safety net for the most vulnerable in our society? Where is justice for the convicted felons who stole our commonwealth?
Who will jail the looters who made helpless Nigerians destitute in their resource-rich nation? Nigerians are not dumb. President Jonathan’s mid-term report is another testament to the ongoing tragedy of Nigerians being ruled by a rabid ruining class with no integrity and sense of posterity.
