A student of the University of Ibadan, Odunayo Aasha, was on Monday crushed to death outside the university.
Aasha, 17, a 200 Level student in the Department of Guidance and Counselling, was killed by a trailer, which lost control and veered off the road at Ojoo area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
She was said to have gone to the market to get some foodstuff and was standing by the roadside, purchasing local roasted plantain, popularly known as Boli.
The trailer driver, said to be driving at top speed to avoid police arrest, lost control and rammed into her.
The petty trader selling the Boli and another passer-by were also crushed to death by the trailer.
The incident, which occurred about 12pm, has thrown the students and the entire university community into mourning.
Aasha is said to be the only daughter of her parents.
Her parents refused to be consoled over the tragic demise of their daughter.
Her mother is said to be in shock and yet to accept that her daughter is dead.
Meanwhile, her roommates at the Queen Idia Hall wept profusely when it was confirmed that Aasha was dead.
One of her friends, who simply identified herself as Rebecca, said Aasha would be greatly missed.
Rebecca said: “She was a very active and vibrant lady.
“I can’t just believe she is dead.
“She sat down on her bed this morning.
“She then said she was going to read for her examination.
“We are shocked she is dead.”
It was gathered that her remains as well as the other corpses have been deposited at a mortuary.
Though an official statement is yet to be released by the school authority, a candle light procession, according to reliable sources, would hold on Tuesday in her honour.
