Protesters on Thursday besieged the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja over trial of Senator Dino Melaye.
This was even as senators stormed the Abuja Court in solidarity with the embattled senator.
Melaye was accused of falsely incriminating the Chief of Staff to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, Edward David, in a reported assassination attempt.
The protesters were at the entrance of the court with different kind of banners, including: “Malami shame on you” and “You cannot kill the truth.”
Senators that were in the court room included Lanre Tejuosho, Matthew Urogbide, Clifford Ordia, Murray Ben-Bruce, Gershom Bassey, Ubali Shittu, Baba Kaka and Ibrahim Gobir.
Melaye had said in his reaction to his arraignment by the Federal Government on March 1 before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja that there was a gang up against him by the Kogi State Government, the Presidency, the Police and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
He said: “The same police who paraded the assassination suspects, their weapons, the car they used, have confessional statements of the suspects, asked me who were my suspects, are now colluding with the Minister of Justice to arraign me for misinformation over a case that is in court, where the court has accepted the statements of the suspects as exhibits.”
