A career diplomat, Michel Kafando, was named on Monday in Ouagadougou as the transitional president of Burkina Faso.
Kafando’s appointment followed the signing of a transitional constitution on Sundayin Ouagadougou by representatives of the military, political parties, religious authorities and civil society.
President Blaise Compaore was ousted just over two weeks ago.
Isaac Zida, the second-in-command of the presidential guard, took power after Compaore fled to Ivory Coast on October 31, following massive rallies demanding an end to his 27-year rule.
Kafando, 72, was due to lead the country until elections in a year’s time.
