Toyota Motor Corp on Wednesday said a senior executive arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s drug laws has resigned.
Julie Hamp, the carmaker’s first female senior executive, was arrested in mid-June for allegedly sending Oxycodone painkiller pills through the mail to Japan.
Oxycodone is illegal without a prescription in Japan.
“Toyota has accepted her resignation after considering the concerns and inconvenience that recent events have caused our stakeholders,” the carmaker said in a statement.
Hamp, Toyota’s Global Chief Communications Officer in Japan, had told Japanese police she did not intend to import narcotics.
“Because the investigation of Ms Hamp is ongoing, there is little Toyota can say at this time,” the company said.
Hamp served as the group’s Vice President at Toyota Motor North America before taking the current position on April 1.
