Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, on Sunday disclosed that the time to fix and get the railways working again is now.
Lawan made this disclosure when the representatives of Niger East Senatorial District, Mohammed Musa, unveiled his Actions Plan for the zone in Minna.
While assuring that he will be fully involved in the fixing of roads in Niger State, the Senate President said: “I think it is time to make our railways work again because the movement of heavy haulage on the roads have really spoilt all our roads.”
Lawan added that the National Assembly will work closely with the Executive arm of government in ensuring that all deplorable federal roads in Niger State are fixed soonest.
Accordingly, he said: “We will work together with the Executive arm of government for the benefit of the people of Niger State and indeed the country to ensure that we achieve our common goal of taking Nigeria to the next level.
“I do not have to drive through the roads to know it’s bad.
“I have heard a lot about it.
“Niger State does not need to lobby for Chairman Senate Committee on Works while I am particularly involved.”
In his address, the Governor of Niger State, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, appealed to the Senate President to consider a senator from the state as Chairman, Senate Committee on Works.
While making the appeal, Governor Bello said: “Niger State has the highest number of federal roads but most of them are not motorable.
“I will plead with the Senate to always ply the Minna-Suleja Road so that you can understand the deplorable level our roads are.”
Earlier, while unveiling the strategic action plan for his senatorial district, Musa said he will propose legislations that will enhance family welfare.
According to him: “We need communities that can coexist and so, I will work closely with the state government to ensure that we tackle poverty by proposing legislations that will enhance family welfare, improve employment and empowerment.”
He also disclosed that his strategic action plan has been reoccurring but has never seen the light of the day.
He further disclosed that all of his allowances and every constituency allocation will go for projects in Nigeria East Senatorial District.
