It was a moment of embarrassment on Tuesday for dignitaries, including Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State, who converged on Dengi Mini Stadium in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State during the sale of fertilizer to farmers for the 2018 farming season.
The event, according to our correspondent, was suddenly highjacked by thugs from different ambitious political office seekers from the area, who stormed the arena, making the whole place uncontrollable.
More visible were supporters of a former Deputy Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly and member representing Kanan in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi.
At the height of the presentation of the Governor’s speech, the youths, who were carrying various sizes of posters of Gagdi for his interest in the Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency seat, became unruly.
They were more interested in pleasing their master, displaying his posters as if it were a campaign rally.
More disturbing was when the Governor was making his speech and the thugs were at the verge of advancing to his stand, to the extent that Lalong had to break his presentation to plead with them to listen to what he was saying.
But this was to no avail as they resisted the combined efforts of security personnel to who wanted to stop them from besieging where Lalong was.
Perhaps for the fear of possible outbreak chaos, the thugs were left to continue with their unruly behaviour.
In the meantime, Lalong announced that the 2018 fertilizer has been subsidized, with N5,500 for NPK Urea and N4,500 for organic fertilizer.
He warned against the sharp practices normally exhibited by the middle men who do buy the commodity at government rate and sell it to farmers at exorbitant rates, saying his administration will not condone such tendencies.
He charged government officials, community leaders to monitor the sales and ensure that the fertilizer reaches the rightful farmers.
