No fewer than three soldiers of the Special Task Force in Plateau State and five others were killed in a fresh attack in Plateau State in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The attack was carried out in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The STF media/information officer, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, confirmed that the incident occurred at about 1:30am Wednesday.
Iweha said they attack was suspected have occurred as an act of reprisal over the killing of about 60 cattle of Fulani herdsmen two days ago.
“Five civilians and three of our men were killed during the attack,” he said.
Iweha further said the STF had since restored calm and order in the area.
He did not state who carried the attack, but a Berom youth leader, Dalyop Dantong, has told the BBC Hausa Service that they suspected Fulani herdsmen carried out the attack.
In a swift response, the state Chairman of the Miyyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Alhaji Usaini Boro, also told the BBC Hausa Service that it was not his men that carried out the attack.
Boro said: “All we know is that our a lot of our cattle were killed in the area recently.
“Why is it that whenever bad things occur, it is alleged that we did it.”
Sixty cattle were reported killed.
