Thousands of people took to the streets to protest in several Peruvian cities, three days after lawmakers voted to impeach President Martin Vizcarra.
People protested against the disempowerment forced by parliament, which led to conservative parliament speaker Manuel Merino taking office as head of state and government on Tuesday.
The protests were somewhat peaceful according to reports, although police used tear gas in the capital Lima.
Some demonstrators and journalists were injured with tear gas and shotgun pellets, El Comercio newspaper reported.
Protests were staged in Lima on consecutive days this week as Amnesty International accused the police of using excessive force against demonstrators.
According to the human rights organisation, the use of tear gas and unidentified ammunition on Tuesday endangered the lives of civilians.
Vizcarra is accused of taking 2.3 million soles ($636,000) of bribes from a construction company during his time as governor of the Moquegua region from 2011 to 2014.
He has consistently denied the allegations and did so again before the impeachment vote.
Vizcarra accuses the opposition of trying to destabilise the country and said he would leave parliament “with his head held high.”
