Staff of Thisday, one of Nigeria’s prestigious dailies, have embarked on another round of strike to protest the incessant failure of the management to meet its salary obligation.
The staff, who declared a face-off with the management on Wednesday, shut down operations at exactly 6pm.
Owing to this, the newspaper, published by Nduka Obaigbena, will not be on the newsstand on Thursday.
This will be the first time since 1996 when the newspaper hit the newsstand, that it will not be on the streets.
The staff had last week Wednesday embarked on a warning strike to protest their unpaid salaries for May, June and July 2013.
Owing to this, Obaigbena was said to have paid a month’s salary to the junior staff, promising to pay the others last week Friday.
The junior workers paid included page planners and production staff.
However, Obaigbena failed to fulfill his promise of paying the others by Friday.
Sequel to the promise made by Obaigbena and in view of the Sallah holidays, the junior workers demanded for their salary only to be told it was not available.
This led them to shut down production at exactly 6pm.
This was despite the promise of N10,000 for each of the junior staff to serve as bonus for the Sallah and payment of salary on Monday.
The staff turned down the offer.
When Obaigbena was told about the spurning of the offer by the staff, he said everyone could go home, thus resulting in the fact that the newspaper will be off the newsstand on Thursday.
Obaigbena has had running battle with the staff of the newspaper since the beginning of 2013 over unpaid wages.
The company has been shut down at least twice this year over unpaid salaries.
