If you like, call it fitting justice coming the way of a man who held everyone hostage ,including the revered organs of government like the Judiciary. His name is Gen. Pervez Musharraf, though some preferred to call him ‘Perverse’ for the way his reign as the avatar in Pakistan did a few abominable things, including holding Judges hostage. Perhaps,
it was William Shakespeare that aptly captured Musharraf’s current travails in his time-tested words: “the evil that men do, live after them.”
Among other charges, Musharraf is facing charges of not doing enough to prevent the gruesome murder of Ms Benazir Bhutto, the country’s former Prime Minister.
Using his position as Chief of Army staff, he was able to get himself the presidency in 1999 through a coup d’etat. The major low point of his boisterous hold on Pakistan was the frosty relationship with the Nation’s judges led by the
irrepressible Chief Justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Chaudhry, in a rare show of unmistakable courage, had, in 2007, ruled against Musharraf’s state of emergency proclamation.
The stand off later degenerated into Musharraf’s suspension of Chaudhry, along with 14 supreme court justices. Unfazed, the justices stuck to their decision and the disapproval by the Pakistani public led to Musharraf’s resignation
and eventually fleeing the country on self-exile.
After his attempt to contest this year’s election was effectively disallowed by a federal high court, Musharraf is expected to have his day in court to say what he did or did not do in the events that culminated in Bhutto’s murder.
It would be unfair to Musharraf’s legacy if there is no word about his unalloyed cooperation with the US in staving off terrorism from the Pakistani space.
Undoubtedly, Musharraf’s current travails should serve as lesson to the demagogues on the saddle currently in the political sphere of the Nigerian state. As no position is permanent, it means that what is done today will become what is examined tomorrow.
God bless Nigeria.
