Heart beating, palm sweating, he stares at the floor waiting for someone to snap him out of it, but guess it was his reality.
All he can think about was what she said to him. He had kept all hopes on her. She was his anchor. Now he is a sinking ship.
He looked at his bag. He still has a little of the cube substance. He promised not to take it anymore, but he saw this coming. She was finally going to leave him for another guy she presumes better.
He paused, looked at the mirror, he gave a cold stare at himself, his mind was made up. There was nothing anyone was going to tell him that he would listen to. His soul was pierced already.
He took out cube, dropped it in his mouth and gave a heavy gulp of it. He stared at himself once again. This time, all he can see is regret and frustration in his eyes. He did it again after all the promise he made to quit drugs.
He kept staring at himself, waiting for cube to kick in. He could literally feel every beat his heart produced. The gushing sound of blood running through his veins and the constant beat of the pulse on his head, his pupils dilated already. “I need water,” he said.
He gently walked into the hall way. The hot atmosphere forced the emission of sweat on his skin. He felt the warmth of the sun. His breath reduced as he tries to listen. And all he heard was the distance chatter and laughter of his fellow students.
He gently carried himself, walking down the hallway. “Hey Bright, how are you?” he heard. He couldn’t make out the voice until he turned back. There she was, laughing and holding him in a distance. He felt this funny feeling in his stomach. His heart skipped a bit as all strange feeling embraced him.
“Can you hear me?” she said again. He finally saw who was speaking. It was Abigail.
“I’m okay,” he muttered. He couldn’t concentrate as her laughter from a distance kept giving him the goose feeling. “I can’t believe she is happy,” he said, adding: “Oh precious. She has been like that for some days now. I heard she is dating a new intake. They said the guy has money. His father owns a reputable company.”
“Where are you heading to?” she called out as he angrily walks away. “Did I say something wrong?” she asked herself.
She said: “He doesn’t seem to be in a good mood today. Did I add to it ? He is always acting strange, always storming off whenever he gets the slightest chance. I wish I can hold him down.”
Abigail turns away with a glimpse of worry on her face as she walks into her classroom. Her friends notices her, asking: “Is everything alright?”.
Abigail said: “I’m just worried about Bright. He seemed to be in a bad mood today and while we were speaking, he angrily stormed off. I guess I said something that made him upset.”
Kehinde responded: “You didn’t get him upset. The bright I know is usually not Bright.”
“You don’t have to be mean you know. He might just have issues he is dealing with,” Ella said
“My dear, we all have issues, but he chose to put his own on his head,” Kehinde added.
Abigail said: “I think it’s more than that. I noticed how he was staring at Precious and that new guy. They were both in an intimate position. Seems he got upset by it. I kind of like him though. He seems cool and cute. I wish he can open up more to me.”
“You see, guys these days are not ready to make any move on any girl due to some assumed reasons, but if you like a guy find a way to hold him down,” Kehinde responded.
Abigail asked: “So what are you insinuating I do?”
Kehinde added: “Try to get him alone and have your way with him. You are a lady. Use what you have to get what you want. The freshers party is coming up. Use it to your advantage.”
The sun rays shine on Bright’s face from his window as he gently opened his eyes to stare at the ceiling. “Its Friday morning already,” he said to himself.
The previous night was quite rocky due to the excessive cube substance he had to consume.
He could barely remember much. All he remembers was the lady he had picked up at the bus stop coming back home with him.
“Where is she?” he asked himself as he noticed that he was the only one in his room and her belongings were no longer in the room.
He also noticed that the last money in his wallet was gone.
Bright hurriedly sat up, staring at his one room apartment and listening to the cock crow, which was later accompanied by the yell of his neighbour’s wife.
“They have started again,” he said. The husband always takes pleasure in beating his wife, while the children stay back and watch as the eldest daughter tries to fight off her dad from her mom.
“What could be the problem this time?” He asked. The last time he tried to separate them, he accidentally received a blow on his lips, which left him sore for days.
He couldn’t eat properly. And he got to find out that the last pot of soup they were supposed to eat that morning has soured because the daughter forgot to warm it the previous night.
“I need to call Chidebere to know his whereabout, he promised to link me up with his General,” he said.
His phone rings. Speaking of the devil. Ebere was the one calling.
Bright said: “Ebere howfa nah? Where are you? You promised to talk to General on my behalf. What has he said?”
Ebere said: “Come to Mega Hotel now. He is requesting for your presence.”
Bright hurriedly dashed into the bathroom, poured few scoops of water on his body and dashed out with a lightning speed. “I can’t afford to keep him waiting,” Bright said.
