One of the key editorial staff of The Eagle Online, Kunle Tahir Alade, is dead.
Alade, one of Nigeria’s finest sports reporters, died in his sleep between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
His last story to the Managing Editor/CEO of Premium Eagle Media Limited, publishers of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, was at 11:28pm on Wednesday.
It was the outcome of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League matches, which Dortmund and Madrid won, to move into the semifinals.
About two hours earlier, he had sent a story on the purported slashing of the salary of the Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi.
Contrary to the widely reported position that Keshi was affected by the salary slash and sacks announced by the Nigeria Football Federation as it affects the coaches of the national teams, Alade said he found out that the contract signed by Keshi protected him from the move.
A statement by the Manager Administration and Accounts of Premium Eagle Media Limited, Popoola Babalola, said Alade hails from Ibadan, Oyo State and was born on May 7.
He was a foundation member of staff of Premium Eagle Media Limited and was preparing to cover the U20 World Cup in Turkey in June.
Before he joined The Eagle Online, Alade had worked for the Nigerian Compass as a Senior Reporter.
Babalola added in the statement: “He showed consistency, sending stories while others were sleeping.
“He was never satisfied until he has checked for the final details.
“The company will surely miss him.
“But our promise to the family as a company is that we will never abandon them in this trying times and in the years ahead.
“May his fine, sporting soul rest in perfect peace.”
