The Taraba Ministry of Education says 14 secondary school principals have been queried over their schools’ alleged involvement in examination malpractice conducted by the West African School Examination Council.
Samson Ada, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, disclosed this at an interactive session with journalists on Wednesday in Jalingo.
The session tagged: ‘Face the Press’ was initiated by Emmanuel Bello, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Darius Ishaku on Public Affairs
It would be recalled that Taraba came first in WAEC results in northern Nigeria and 8th in the country in the 2017 WAEC result.
Ada said that the query was part of the disciplinary measures put in place by the ministry to ensure quality education to the people of the state.
He said: “Principals are not supposed to leave the school premises while examinations are ongoing in case there are issues they would address.
“From the letters written by WAEC to the schools intimating them of why results of some subjects in their schools were withheld, it was obvious the principals were not on ground during the examination.
“We are going to do a follow up on their matter to ascertain what exactly happened so as to prevent future occurrence.”
He also explained that the government would soon address issues that led to the strike embarked upon by the state university lecturers.
Ada said: “When the new Vice Chancellor came, he saw the need to introduce new faculties and courses which led to increase in manpower and the rise in the salaries to the university lecturers.
“The university has come to stay and government is committed in making the university one of the best in the country.
“The issues that led to the strike will soon be resolved.”
He appealed to the lecturers, students and parents to understand the position of the government to move the university and the state forward.
