Tanker drivers protesting the shooting of the tyres of one of them by policemen in the convoy of a prominent Nigerian blocked the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for over 13 hours between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
The road was blocked at Ogere, Ogun State, where the tanker drivers have constituted themselves into a nuisance by parking indiscriminately on the road despite a huge tanker bay, with all facilities in place, constructed by the administration of former Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State.
It was learnt that the protest began at about 11pm on Wednesday following the shooting of the tyre of one of the tankers with number plate JIGAWA XC 405 DUT, already loaded with petroleum product.
The spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Prince Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the development.
Adejobi said: “We understand that a policeman attached to a VIP shot at tyres of a fuel tanker.
“I can tell you authoritatively that the policeman is not from the Ogun State command.
“In their usual manner, other drivers blocked the road in solidarity.
“The police, led by the command’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abdulkadir, swung into action immediately.
“We engaged them in negotiations and they have agreed to take their tankers off the road.”
The drivers only heeded the plea at about noon on Thursday.
