The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, has called on Nigerians to unite to confront the challenges facing the country.
Tambuwal made the call in Bauchi at a leadership colloquium and unveiling of Chigari Foundation, an NGO organised by a former Minister of State for Health, Dr. Muhammed Pate.
The speaker, who was represented by Nasiru Ibrahim, a member of the National Conference, said only a united nation can confront the challenges.
“Nigeria is facing serious challenges that require commitment of all tiers of government,” he said, and advised Nigerians to respect the law of the country.
He said: “We cannot be a lawless society and expect that we are going to have a good leader.
“The challenges we have today are so enormous and we have to change our culture and also correct our attitude.”
In his speech, Gov. Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State said that to be a good leader, one must have the will, passion, zeal and honesty to succeed.
Yuguda urged Nigerian leaders to be sincere, committed and focused to be able to carry out their duties for Nigeria’s progress.
He said: “For a leader to succeed, he must have the zeal, the passion, sincerity, commitment but if you do not have all these, you will end up a failure.
“It is a fundamental issue for one to be sincere, honest, and transparent so we can get to where we are going in this country.”
The Emir of Dass in Bauchi State, Alhaji Bilyaminu Usman, said the establishment of a youth centre in Misau would usher in an era where youth can have access to information technology.
Usman said it would also be an avenue to strengthen the girl child education and provide counselling to them, adding that it would take the youth off the street.
He said: “While taking the youth off the street, it will be an avenue to strengthen the girl child education and give counselling.
“Only this week, 25 secondary school students from across the 20 local governments of the state were awarded scholarships by Chigari Foundation.
“The scholarship will continue to be awarded every year to the students at different levels of their education.”
In a vote of thanks, Pate said that he felt he should do something for the future by awarding scholarships.
The colloquium was attended by the governors of Bauchi and Borno States, Isa Yuguda and Kashim Shettima; the UNFPA Director General, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin; and other dignitaries.
