Speaking at the official opening of the 15th Abuja International Trade Fair on Thursday, Adebayo said the country would benefit immensely from Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment as WTO Director-General.
On October 28, the General Council of the WTO declared Dr. Okonjo-Iweala as the best suited candidate to occupy the position, but the United States of America challenged the declaration, adding that it would continue to support the next candidate in line, South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Yoo Myung-hee.

Okonjo-Iweala is one of two candidates contesting for the top position of the multilateral institution.
Yoo is South Korea’s Trade Minister, while Okonjo-Iweala is a development economist.
Amina Mohamed, who is the East African nation’s sports minister, progressed to the second round of selection to become the next director-general of the WTO, along with four other candidates, on Friday.
The other contestants, who are from Kenya, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and the UK, on Friday advanced to the next round of voting after six days of confidential consultation with members.
Okonjo-Iweaka underscored the role of the global trade body in Geneva at a reception held in her honour by the Nigerian Permanent Mission to the UN, while appealing for global support for her candidacy as the race for the WTO Director General position enters the election phase.
In a statement on Saturday, Obi stated that Okonjo-Iweala had the knowledge, skills, exposure and experience to successfully direct the affairs of the organisation.
Okonjo-Iweala, Nigerian’s former Minister of Finance and later Minister of Foreign Affairs, was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari for the position.
