WhatsApp is versatile. It is user friendly. It can handle calls, messages, video, files and just about everything any computer can and, because it is encrypted end to end, nobody can read, see, or hear any of your stuff unless you want them to. Since adding the WhatsApp feature in April 2016, Facebook the parent company has sold its “end to end encryption” as the reason to use it above all other smartphone message applications. The pitch has been a roaring success. WhatsApp is currently the world’s most popular messaging app, with over two billion active monthly users. WhatsApp is used in over 180 countries. 54% of millennials and just over a third of baby boomers (36%) use WhatsApp daily.

A statement by Dr Femi Adeluyi, Technical Assistatnt (Information Technology) to the Minister, said the minister has directed the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), as the Regulator of the Information Technology sector, to engage vigorously with Facebook to understand the processes, level of security, etc of the data of Nigerian users in order to ensure that policies proposed for Nigeria strictly adhere to the provisions of NDPR.

In a bid to reinforce its commitment to first-rate experience, the lender introduced Leo, the Chat Banker, in 2018 and did not rest on its oars as it innovated with more firsts launching on Facebook in 2019 and on WhatsApp, following which it created Leo Apple Business Chat for IoS, on iPhone and iPad, a feat its peers are yet to replicate, even though some banks like Diamond Bank, now merged with Access Bank, tried with Ada and StanbicIBTC Bank’ Sami. First Bank and GT Bank also launched on WhatsApp. They were all unable to replicate the success story of UBA’s Leo.

However, while the above mentioned individuals tried unsuccessfully to emerge in their electioneering experiment, there are others who started their ambition on social media and succeeded in winning their election.
