It would be recalled that a group of protesters on Monday and Tuesday barricaded the Abuja office of Amnesty International and asked the international organisation to quit Nigeria within 24 hours
SERAP said this in a letter dated March 10, 2017 and signed by its Deputy Director, Timothy Adewale
SERAP’s statement on Tuesday, signed by its Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, followed the disclosure by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, that in the last few weeks, the office has received a few cases of Nigerians with valid multiple-entry US visas being denied entry and sent back to Nigeria
SERAP spoke against the backdrop of the launch of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s library on Saturday
The organization also urged SADC to use the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation within SADC to immediately set up an independent and impartial body to investigate all acts of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreign nationals
The organization asked Idris to compile and pass on information on the spending of the funds by states to Malami so that he can take appropriate legal action
The letter was made available to the press on Sunday
The group, numbering over 38, specifically urged the President to “ignore the detractors, who have been bought by corrupt politicians ahead of the 2019 general elections”
The organization also urged President Buhari to “urgently publish the outcome of the investigation conducted on the matter by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN, and to ask Mr Malami to hand over the file to both the EFCC and ICPC”
The urgent appeal followed the arrest of Dapo Olorunyomi, the Publisher of PREMIUM TIMES, and the Judiciary Correspondent of the newspaper, Evelyn Okakwu
The letter was dated January 18, 2017 and signed by SERAP’s Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni
The petition, dated December 27, 2016, was sent to the EFCC Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Mustafa Magu, by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project
This followed a petition dated December 30, 2016 and sent by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project to Callamard
The organization also asked Callamard to “request to visit Nigeria to conduct fact-finding mission into the circumstances surrounding the killing”
The organization urged the EFCC to “invite for questioning, and name and shame anyone suspected to be involved in the alleged diversion, including the contractors allegedly handling the project”
This was contained in the petition dated December 16, 2016 and signed by SERAP’s Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni
