The workers who spoke, through the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Virginus Nwobodo and his Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) counterpart, Comrade Benneth Asogwa, during the occasion of this year’s May Day celebration, held at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, appreciated Gov. Ugwuanyi, who was present at the annual event, for his unequalled resilience in the approval and payment of the new N30,000 minimum wage and its consequential adjustment to the state workers.

The NLC in a communiqué issued at its recent virtual National Executive Meeting by the president, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, stated that the demand was consequent on the incontrovertible evidence that the power sector privatisation has failed to achieve any of its objectives, which include improving the quality and quantity of electricity supply to Nigerians, shedding of power sector funding from the government and increasing revenue from power sector investment to the coffers of government.

At a security stakeholders meeting in Owerri, the state capital on Thursday which had in attendance the newly deployed Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 9, Umuahia, Ekim Okon, the governor said that traditional rulers must begin to take responsibilities for what happens in their communities.

The protest which was led by the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, involved workers under the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), and Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporation and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC).

Jediel’s younger brother, Mr. Fidelis Jediel, told journalists that the State NLC chairman was picked in his house in Sunkani, Ardo- Kola local government area of Taraba about 12:55 am.
