Since the establishment of the Nigerian Communications Commission, it has been consistent in deepening and protecting the rights of consumers. Indeed, one of the core mandates of the NCC is to protect the rights of telecom consumers in Nigeria. The protection of the rights is enshrined in Chapter VII of the NCC Act (NCA 2003), that gave legality to the Consumer Affairs Bureau, a key department of the NCC.

The EVC made this disclosure during the commissioning of the ECC in Owerri, Imo State over the weekend by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami.
The event, held at the NCC’s Communications and Digital Economy Complex, Mbora, Abuja, was attended by the top notch of the fourth estate of the realm both physically and virtually, as well as the senior management of the Commission, including the Executive Commissioner Stakeholder Management, Adeleke Adewolu.
The selection of the three companies followed a careful and painstaking evaluation of 282 entries in the NCC COVID-19 Virtual Hackathon from digital innovation Startups and Small and Medium Enterprises by an evaluation committee set up by the Commission.
Two of the awards: “Human Rights Telecoms Defender” for the EVC and “Human Rights Guard” for the Commission, as a corporate entity, were presented by Wheel of Hope Human Rights Foundation, a frontline Nigerian Non-Governmental Organisation.
This was confirmed in a statement on Friday in Lokoja by SOLSAN Technology Ventures Limited, the private firm managing the emergency number on behalf of NCC in the state.
He said this at the virtual inauguration of 12 projects across six geopolitical zones of the country by Dr. Ali Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, on Thursday in Abuja.
Danbatta stated this during the 4th phase of the virtual commissioning of additional 12 digital economy projects implemented by agencies under the Ministry by the Minister, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, which also coincided with the Minister’s one year anniversary in office.

The NCC’s ECC project, which makes it possible for people of Kaduna and environs to dial 112 Emergency Number to get help during emergencies from appropriate emergency response agencies, is aimed at supporting the Federal Government agenda of enhancing security of lives and property in the country.
In order to further ensure transparency and accountability in regard to effective regulation and prevention of anti-competitive behaviour, the NCC has commenced the implementation of the Accounting Separation Framework in the Nigerian telecoms industry effective July 15, 2020
Besides this declaration, the Commission has reiterated its commitment to ensuring improvement in the Quality of Service and Quality of Experience for the nation’s over 190 million telecom subscribers, even as the global community grapples with the challenges of containing the spread and management of COVID-19 pandemic.
